Florida RB James out for Sugar Bowl (AP)

Fresno State RB Mathews to enter draft (AP)Fresno State star running back Ryan Mathews will skip his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Mathews announced his decision Tuesday through Sun West Sports, which will represent him. Mathews thanked Fresno State and said playing in the NFL was his dream. Mathews leads major college football with 1,808 yards rushing this season.

Rutgers junior OT Davis jumps to NFL (AP)Saying the NFL “has been in my heart for a while,” Rutgers offensive tackle Anthony Davis is skipping his senior season and entering the draft. “It’s always been in the back of my head and now that the opportunity is here, I sat down with my coaches and my family and we decided that this my best move,” said Davis, who has been projected as a first-round pick.

Nebraska DT Suh named AP player of the yearNEW YORK (AP) — Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh bulled past the guys who play the glamour positions and proved you don’t have to score touchdowns or toss passes to be the player of the year.



Florida RB James out for Sugar Bowl (AP)Florida’s Brandon James, who leads the team in all-purpose yards, will not play in the Sugar Bowl after having surgery on his right foot. James, a senior from St. Augustine, broke a bone in foot against Alabama in the Southeastern Conference title game and had surgery last week. Florida coach Urban Meyer says Chris Rainey, Jeff Demps and Joe Haden will take over James’ punt and kickoff.

    Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden meets with the media following his last football practice at the practice fields, Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, in Tallahassee, Fla. Bowden, who is retiring, will coach his last game at the Gator Bowl against West Virginia on Jan. 1, 2010, in Jacksonville, Fla.

    Bobby Bowden said Tuesday that while he wanted to coach another year at Florida State, “that was out” as an option. Bowden announced his retirement Dec. 1 — a day after expressing a desire to coach in 2010 during a meeting with university officials. “I wanted to, but that was out,” he told The Associated Press as he motored his golf cart onto Florida State’s practice field.

    Sanford picked to run Louisville offense (AP)Former UNLV head coach Mike Sanford is the new offensive coordinator at Louisville. Louisville coach Charlie Strong announced the hire on Tuesday. Sanford was fired as head coach of the Runnin’ Rebels last month. He went 16-43 in five seasons at UNLV, failing to make a bowl game in any season. Sanford previously worked as offensive coordinator at Utah under Urban Meyer.
